Documenting Musical Instruments as Architectonic Systems: A Methodological Perspective

Abstract

How should we document a musical instrument? In many cases, instruments are described through classification systems, measurements, and lists of components. While these approaches are important, they often present instruments as fixed objects rather than as carefully constructed systems shaped through material choices, structural relationships, and craft knowledge. As a result, the internal organisation that allows an instrument to function as a coherent sound-producing whole can remain insufficiently articulated. This paper suggests approaching musical instruments as architectonic systems, that is, as organised structures in which each component has a specific role and where the relationships between parts are as important as the parts themselves. Instead of viewing an instrument simply as a member of a classificatory category, this perspective focuses on how materials, form, tension, and construction processes work together to produce sound. The paper outlines a methodological framework for documenting instruments in this way, combining structural description with step-by-step construction processes and insights from instrument makers. The tabla is selected as a percussion instrument that is used to illustrate how such documentation can make the interdependence of structure, sound, and craftsmanship visible. By foregrounding structural organisation and artisan knowledge, the proposed method aims to complement existing documentation practices and suggest an addition rather than replacing or rejecting them. It also opens up new ways of thinking about sustainability and the transmission of craft knowledge. In doing so, the paper argues for a more integrated, process-oriented approach to documenting musical instruments in organology and ethnomusicology.
