Ragas in Indian Texts

Abstract

The term 'Raga' is defined in various ways. In Indian texts, it has been defined as, "Ranjayati iti Ragah". Raga means a melody. Many melodies can be made from one Raga. So Indian classical Music is called 'Raga Sangeet'. Raga is the biggest feature: योऽयंध्वनिनवशेषस्तुस्वरवर्णनवभूनषतः। रंजकः जिनित्तिांस रागः कनितो बुध ः।। Raga is the melodic form underlying Indian classical music. Raga consists a fixed set of notes with ascending and descending scale. This paper presents a bird's eye view of the Ragas depicted in different musical texts by the authors ion different time periods.
