A Musicological Exploration of Assamese Wedding Songs: ‘Biyä-Näm’

Abstract

It is said that marriages are made in heaven and celebrated on earth. The marriage or the wedding ceremony is considered to be a major event in human life and society. Man and woman represent the two halves of the divine body. It is the wedding ceremony that offers social sanction to their conjugal life. In India, the Vedic scriptures accorded sanction to various festivities and postulated eight kinds of marriage to be performed with ceremonial rites.
